Over and over, he’d replayed those moments. The briefest of hesitations in Jivek when Calvin said the word ‘Breveka’. He hadn’t expected to hear it from his son. The understanding – the relief – when he realized Calvin didn’t know anything else swiftly turning to rage at being questioned. At the insubordination of a child daring to speak back their parent and an underling to their patron.
Then, another image popped into his thoughts. Caitlin standing by his computer, the screen turned to face him. On it was his research. This is what you’ve been doing? She’d demanded. She was shaking, wetness in her eyes but she didn’t cry. You promised me, Cal. You promised.
I know. But–
She hadn’t wanted to hear it, storming out of the room. None of it’s real. It’s all lies. You’re just chasing ghosts, and for what? What?
“You’re wrong, Cait,” Calvin said to the office. “It’s not all lies.”
She found out that I knew you and she wanted to know, too.
And what is it you know?
So much, little friend. Oh so much about your ‘father’ and the ‘family’ you think you have.
It knows, Calvin thought, tapping his finger softly on the desk. Whatever Kuraka had known, this thing, this… ‘Watcher’ knew it too. You see. You listen and the rest is up to you.
“This really is a game, isn’t it?” he asked. “But what do you get out of it?”
He wasn’t able to answer that. Not yet. He would, though. He’d find the answers to the game he and his sister were playing, to what that thing wanted of them and the secret that it was keeping. The very same secret he’d seen in their father’s eyes and heard in Kuraka’s denigrating laughter.
What happened on Breveka?
