Scars, Chapter 38

The first major update for this month is here, with a new chapter for Scars. Our plucky band of adventurers accepts a new job for the king of Talloic; a murder has been committed in his castle and he wants to know who is responsible. The only problem is, they don’t know who the victim is, or when the killing occurred.

Meanwhile, Khy-kala has been approached for a second job in the belief that she can make a much-needed diplomatic connection for the court.

In the snippet below, she discusses her departure with Jilene. For the full chapter, check out the links above and enjoy!

“Do you know how long you’ll be gone?”

Khy-kala stroked the blonde’s hair. It was freshly washed and smelled of cloves, rose water, ashes and pig fat, a mixture of conditioner, cleansers and scents to cover up the former, a combination that Khy-kala had learned to tolerate during her time among humans, and even use on her own hair to her eternal annoyance. Some days she would kill to use elven soap and conditioners just one more time, but mingled with Jilene’s natural scent, it wasn’t so bad. “I don’t,” she admitted.

“Will you write?” Jilene asked. “I’ve never had anyone write to me before. I think I’d like it.”

The elf smiled. “You’d like some new stories, then? Ones just for you?”

Jilene nuzzled deeper against Khy-kala’s chest. She ignored the rough edges of the elf’s scars, enjoying the warmth and smell of her lover’s body. “Yes,” she confessed. She was a grown woman and now a vampire, forsaken by the Pantheon, but she still remembered the sense of excitement and wonder she’d had from listening to the tales spun by her father and babysitters back in the bend, or reading storybooks until the pages were stained from her fingerprints. Tales of adventurers, heroes and princesses had always captivated her.

She’d learned that life wasn’t like that, but there were still stories it could tell, ones even more exhilarating and terrifying than anything from her books. Jilene wanted to hear them all and one day, maybe even create some of her own. She knew she wasn’t yet ready for that. She was still fighting the blood curse and still learning about the world outside her village. Everything was new and frightening and dangerous. She dearly wanted to ask Khy-kala to take her along, but she knew the elf couldn’t.
