Scars, Chapter 39

This month’s first story update brings us back to Scars, and the party on their way to Talos to investigate a months-old murder, as well as fulfill a little bit of a sidequest. Adding party members can be tricky, especially if your Charisma isn’t high enough, (or you have a negative modifier, as all but one of our group do). Below is a snippet from their arrival at their destination and Khy-kala’s warnings to her group about what to expect.

“Ah,” the noble said, some hours later. “This is the path.”

It wasn’t much of one, little more than a grassy trail just wide enough for a wagon to pass through. Branches slapped and rasped against the sides of the nobleman’s carriage and the adventurers’ wagon as they theoretically followed the path towards their destination.

“So again,” Kevac called to Justir as the little man urged his mule after the carriage. “What are we doing in this crease of Vestia’s cunt?”

“The baron hasn’t said any more than he already has,” the Jherlander called back. “Someone else will be coming with us, and we’re to meet them here.”

“Maybe,” Khy-kala said from the back of the wagon.

Justir couldn’t hear her, but Kevac did. “You know something, bitey?”

“I know a lot of things.”

“But do you know about this thing in particular?”

“I do.”

Kevac made an exasperated noise. “It’s unbecoming for a lady of your age to act this way, you know. You should have maturity and decorum.”

She smiled at him. “I can only hope to strive towards the example of maturity and responsibility you set for us all, little man.”

“Damn right, you do. I am an accomplished and well-respected man of means, and as a dwarf, I have the responsibility to represent my people in the most flattering light possible. But that’s as may be, girl. What do you know about this? Are we headed towards something that I’ll need my knives for?”

Khy-kala shook her head. “No,” she answered, catching the small man’s eyes. “The only danger here is one you’ll bring upon yourself.”

A flash of cold ran through Kevac as he recalled their breakfast from weeks ago, and the sudden sense of danger he’d gotten from the elf. He didn’t know why, but he got that same sense from the woman’s words. “I see.”
