Aleksandra was on her feet, approaching the screen. She turned her head towards the Diamond. “You need to leave,” she advised. “Now.”
“Why?”
“You saw it,” the girl answered. She pressed her hand against the screen, staring at the looping image of the unfathomable construct.
Kaila had heard that it was some kind of Imperial device, something they were using to control or navigate through the Mists. Something they’d built at the High Castle to let them-
“And it saw you,” Aleksandra finished. “It knows you’re here. It won’t like that.”
“What is it?” Kaila pressed. “Some kind of weapons platform? A navigational marker? Ming-na Diaz was looking for it. Was it on some kind of maintenance run or-”
“It’s an Obelisk,” Aleksandra told her. “They rarely come out this far. They,” she emphasized the word just enough for Kaila to know she was referring to the researchers, “wanted to study it and hoped it wouldn’t notice them. Sometimes it won’t. They’re getting better at that part. Justin,” she said the name with scorn, “does good work.” She tapped her chin, still staring at the screen. “That’s what they wanted me for,” she realized. “They wanted to make sure the sliver wouldn’t break me, so they could-” she cut herself off. “Has it sped up?”
Kaila paused. Her jaw tightened. “Yes.”
“It saw you,” the girl confirmed. “And it’s not happy.” She finally turned her attention away from the looping images on the screen. “You really don’t want to let it find you.”
