“How is he?” Khy-kala asked as she shut the door to Sie-thyne’s new laboratory. The olive-skinned elf was sitting at the largest desk, her bags unpacked as she arranged and organized ingredients, another desk covered with pages of notes from the king’s physicians and healers. Her son was napping in a sling strung between two posts.

“The mayfly king continues to sleep,” the apothecary replied as she sifted between her notes, the medical reports and her supplies. “If he survives the until tomorrow, I will continue tending to him. I was told he is resting more comfortably than he has in a week. I’m using the time to prepare additional treatments and creating the last dose of Kindness I have with me.”

“I’m glad to hear he’s improved,” Khy-kala noted. “But I wasn’t talking about him.” She stood next to the sleeping baby. She smiled down at him. He didn’t wake up, yawning and kicking his little legs once before burping once and stilling. “How has this little one been doing with all the changes?”

“I fed him a few minutes ago,” Sie-thyne answered. “He’s sleeping off his meal. Luckily, he hasn’t been arguing about having to share it.” She got up, standing next to Khy-kala and touching her son’s cheek with a gentle finger. He grabbed at it in his sleep and smiled. “He’s very resilient and he’s got a good nature. He’s like his father that way. If he were more like me, he’d be screaming, spitting and biting.”

Khy-kala put her hand on Sie-thyne’s back. “He’s got his mother’s strength and adaptability, too.”

“Maybe.”

Khy-kala chirped, angling her head just enough that her left horn clacked against Sie-thyne’s right in admonition. It felt good to be with another of her own kind again, to be able to do the little things that another elf understood automatically.

Until she finds out what you are, Melody whispered. I know you fear that, little rabbit. And you should. Do you think she’ll let something like you anywhere near that child once she learns the truth? The soundless words felt like the coils of a snake moving against each other, scales brushing against scales. I am the only one who knows what you truly are. I am the only one who truly loves you for all the blood and horror your soul is capable of. That is why I chose you.
